Okay, if you are living in Nigeria, you know that the temperatures have been somewhat cold lately and not everyone is coping very well. Unless of course you grew up in a cold area of Nigeria like Jos. Anyways, for those who are not so used to the cold, here are some quick cold tips to help you and your loved ones say warm.
Wear an inner layer
There are three major ways through which cold enters the body and the chest is one of those. Always wear an inner layer beneath your clothes to keep your chest protected. This is the first of our cold tips.
Sleep with socks
Remember I said there are 3 ways that cold enters the body? Well, the feet are another area. When you sleep your body temperature drops so it’s easy for cold to get in. Put on thick socks to keep your feet warm.
Use a beanie cap
Another area to protect from the cold is your head so using a beanie cap on your head is a good idea. If you don’t have one, use a thick scarf or shawl. Make sure you cover your ears too.
Drink hot beverages
This is going to be a tough one for you tea and coffee haters (I can’t even imagine!). But if you want to stay warm, you need to keep your insides warm too and I’m not talking about ‘hot’ drinks (you know what I mean). This is my favourite of the cold tips and why I love cold weather.
Take a cup of tea, coffee, chocolate, whatever you prefer in the morning and also in the evening.
Drink lots of fluids
Oh yeah, you need to keep hydrated. Drink lots of water, soups and liquids like pepper soup. Don’t ask me why, but they do help to keep the cold/flu symptoms at bay.
Fruits boost your immune system, which is also a great protection against the cold. Many people are more susceptible to chest infections this period so your immune system needs all the help it can get.
Try fruits like Apples, Pawpaw, grapefruit and bananas.
Don’t ignore Vitamin C
Yeah, stock up on Vitamin C. That annoying sniff sniff that can come from exposure to cold? Vitamin C will totally help to dry out your nose.
Use Hand Cream
One major disadvantage of cold weather is chapped and dry hands so use a high moisturising cream on your hands as often as possible (or each time you wash your hands). If you have some Shea butter at home that will do too.
