Dealing with stress is not easy during any phase of life; but it gets really difficult when you have a newborn baby. During the postpartum phase, women are mostly going through some hormonal imbalances which can stress them out. A lot of us tend to have traumas that we carry with us from our childhood, both knowingly and unknowingly. These traumas can trigger stress in us without our being able to detect any trauma.
What I mean to tell you is that you could have stress for a plethora of reasons, but when you have recently had a baby, you need to focus on ways to cure it before it damages you and your baby’s health or your relationship with the newborn. So I’m sure that you get the picture, now let’s talk about a few ways in which you can cope with the stress with a newborn baby.
1. Get Rid of Schedules
Yes, you heard me right! You can go ahead and through that life planner journal out the window (not literally!) because obviously, you’re not going to find enough time for all of these activities in your day-to-day routine. A newborn child demands a lot of attention, and from nappy-changing sessions to a cry-baby segment, I’m sure majority of your day will be occupied with your child. Any wish man (or woman) would bet their money on having scheduled activities at a minimum so that you do not get frustrated about not meeting your daily goals. Give yourself some time to adjust to the new routine, and you should be able to see the difference.
2. Avoid Alcohol And/or Drugs!
Jokes apart, ladies; but you ought not to consume alcohol just because you’re upset. You see, this is a downward spiral that has the capability of sucking you in completely if you don’t pay attention to it. So stay away from drinking and also avoid the excessive use of weed for depression. I understand that some strains of marijuana can be great for your health, read here, but too much of anything is bad. You don’t want to mess up with your natural endocannabinoid system.
And as for alcohol, we all know that among other perils, it can make you obese as well. We don’t need yet another reason to feel self-conscious and therefore; do avoid drinking at all costs. It will be the sanest decision you would have made.
3. Cut Yourself Some Slack
Most of the time, we invite stress in our lives due to the standards that we have set for ourselves. You want to be the perfect mom and a perfect wife, but in the real world, perfection does not exist. You have to make peace with the fact that you won’t always be able to cook the perfect dinner or clean your house till it shines like a diamond, quite literally!
Get a housemaid; there’s nothing wrong with getting help. You don’t need to cook a three-course meal at dinner every day, and ice cream should suffice for a dessert. Give yourself some leverage; allow yourself to accept that you cannot humanly do everything to perfection while dealing with a newborn, and you would feel the weight lifting off your shoulders. That’s when you know you’re coping with the stress in the best possible way.
4. Enjoy It But Don’t Overdo It
I understand that having a newborn can change the whole perspective of your life. The attention that a newborn child needs or let me rephrase it, the recognition that a young child gets is by virtue of the beauty of this phase of life that a mother is going through. While some of you might not be completely taken aback by the chaotic changes and must be enjoying this period of life, I feel the need to remind you that you have other relationships as well.
The relationship that gets affected the most as a result of a newborn baby is your relationship with your spouse. Or if the baby has siblings, they are bound to feel more ignored because the addition in the family makes them hypersensitive about their position in the family. So you have to be careful about the way you treat your other relationships, it will also keep you from getting stressed out.
5. Love Yourself
… and good care of yourself, because if you cannot take care of yourself, no one will know how to do it. Take yourself on a date if you are a single mom, pamper yourself with a nice bath and some bath bombs, and go on a shopping spree. Just make sure you’re doing more of what makes you happy. Taking care of yourself should always be your prime preference because if you’re not alright, it will eventually affect your family and your baby.
