All About Cellulite & How To Prevent It

Simply put, cellulite is accumulated fat in your body that starts to look dimpled and bumpy. Cellulite usually sets in after puberty and is more common in females. The pockets of fat are mostly found around the thighs and buttocks. It can also appear on your knees, upper arm and belly.

What causes cellulite?

Cellulite is caused by factors such as change in metabolism, genes, lifestyle and hormones.

Genes: If your mum had cellulite, you most likely will if you don’t watch it.

Lifestyle: If your body isn’t getting enough activity, you are eating too much carbohydrate or too much salts, you have an increased likelihood of developing cellulite

Hormones: hormones such as estrogen, insulin, thyroid and prolactin can contribute to the development of cellulite.

Cellulite and pregnancy

If you already have cellulite, pregnancy might accentuate it as you will again weight during pregnancy. A pregnant woman without cellulite might have to deal with cellulite after pregnancy due to the fact that within the past year, her skin has stored fat.

What can you do to prevent cellulite?

Exercise

While exercise won’t necessarily prevent cellulite after the fact (except you are overweight), it can however, prevent it from getting out of hand. Let exercise become your lifestyle, exercise while pregnant and post-pregnancy.

Watch your food.

Since cellulite is fat, eating fatty foods will only make it worse. Watch your carb intake, eat more of protein and vitamins, eat lots and lots of fruits.

Don’t wear overly tight undergarment

Undergarments with really tight elastic has been listed as one of the possible causes of cellulite. Just to be safe, where undergarments that aren’t so tight, they hurt your body.

Drink lots of water

Drinking water always seems to be the solution to everything. Stay hydrated always. Don’t let your mouth be completely dry before you take water. Drink at least 2 liters of water a day.

For those who already have cellulite, there is no substantial evidence that anything cures cellulite. However, therapy, cellulite cream and even surgery have been used to attempt to get rid of cellulite.
