Lie One – You need to look good for others
The view that we need to look good for others is definitely something that is wrong. Yes, it’s nice when other people approve of what we look like and give us compliments, but we shouldn’t get so hung up on it that we design our appearance for their approval.
Instead, if we want to change things, like getting a new haircut, buying a different style of dress or even having a little nip and tuck with plastic surgery, we should do so for ourselves and our own happiness. Not for other people.
Lie Two: Looking after myself is vain
It’s also common to hear women criticising other women for being too vain, and paying too much attention to their appearance. Although, does looking after ourselves mean that we are vain? I don’t think so! Looking presentable, wearing clean, pressed clothes, a slick of lipstick and having our hair done before we leave the house isn’t vanity. Looking in the mirror all of the time, and letting our other responsibilities in life slip because we are, so appearance obsessed by our appearance is.
Sadly, a lot of this criticism can come from a place of jealousy, when one woman is jealous of what the other has got or how she looks. However, surely it’s better to complement and support our sisters when they look nice instead of accusing them of being vain. In that way, we can all embrace looking after ourselves and our own appearance, feel better, and reduce this air of judgement that surrounds such things.
Lie Three: I know what suits me, so I don’t need to try anything new
Another lie that we tell ourselves in relation our appearance that is false is that there is never the need to try anything new. Whether that is a different style of trousers or tops, a new haircut, or a shade of eyeshadow that we wouldn’t normally go for. However, fashion is always changing, and we change too. Meaning that things that suited us in our 20’s may not look right in our 40’s and beyond. As well as part of the fun you can have with your appearance is trying out new things and experimenting.
So don’t let yourself get stuck in a rut with the clothes that you wear or the look that you have. Browse fashion sites like Vogue online, and your local stores for new style ideas, and check out these suggestions for haircuts that can give your look a fantastic refresh. Just don’t be fooled by the lie that trying new things is a bad idea because it isn’t!
