This is one question we often face as mothers and wives…are we building a life that means something? We wake up each morning and rush to prepare meals, get the house organized, run up and down to ensure that our families are okay and then we go to bed tired only to wake up the next morning to repeat the same endless exercise.
Perhaps you have looked at your life and you are hard pressed to believe that you are actually building a life that means something.
Your family and your children have been given to you on sacred trust. Every single thing you do to ensure that their lives are richer and more meaningful is a block in the meaningful life you are building.
There is something in every one of us that searches for fulfillment. You want to know that your life counts for something and this deep desire has pushed several women into a frenzy of religious activities or charitable organizations. There is nothing wrong with this particularly if it gives you a feeling of fulfillment.
However, you need to realize that your family is your primary responsibility…even above and beyond your personal fulfillment. It is important for a woman to find fulfillment because it sends a strong message to those who are watching, like your children. BUT if you cannot find fulfillment in your home and you choose to pursue other interests, this should not come at the expense of your family.
For people like me who have so many dreams and plans, this is a bit hard to swallow. There are so many things I want to do with my life…stuff that will give my life even more meaning. But I made a choice to put on hold, those things which could potentially conflict with my family. I still have things like Naija Housewives, which is really precious to me, but it does not come in conflict with my primary duty – my family.
If you have been struggling with this, I want you to relax and find peace. Your children will grow and the demands on your will reduce. Then you will be able to follow even more of your dreams.
Don’t ever think that what you are doing now does not count, because it does. Your life means a lot to God and to your family. Encourage yourself and do not get tired of building a life that means something. It might not seem obvious now, but your light will shine bright eventually.
