We have often heard that it is important to have a hand skill. In the olden days, parents forced their children to learn how to sew and make hair and they pushed their boys into carpentry. These was regardless of if they went to University or not. The thinking then was that they might find themselves in an environment where their degrees and certificates might be of little or no use and their skills would be what would help them survive.

In today’s economy, the need for a skill is even more emphasized. In a situation where a person has a Master’s degree and even a Ph.D and that person is still unemployed, it is easy to come to the conclusion that learning a skill, even if it’s as a backup, is more than necessary; it is imperative.

Purses and Jewelry

With that in mind, we took an interest Olufunmilayo Ogunlusi of OS Fashions. She did not just have a skill, but she goes around teaching that skill to others. She creates fashion accessories using African Fabrics. So you have purses and shoes, elegant necklaces and other jewelries, all made from our local fabric. What drew us to her was how beautifully made her products are and unlike several training programs we come across, hers was very affordable.

We asked her what her motivation was in teaching this skill, she replied us by saying “I love fashion and I’m creative. My business is one that creates employment for people who are jobless, it reduces the number of people who are jobless.”

With that in mind, she has organized training workshops in 4 different locations so that as many women as possible can take part in the training. So if you are in Abuja, Akure, Ibadan or Lagos  you can be a part of this training. You will learn how to make:

  • Fashion purses
  • Bags
  • Shoes
  • Fashion accessories
