There is a saying that people will treat you the way you treat yourself. Therefore if you do not love and respect yourself, don’t expect anyone to love and respect you. Of course there are people, like our parents and close friends who will love you no matter how you feel about you, but if you really want to be treated right by others, you need to learn to start treating you right.
A good place to start is to know your love language. First and foremost, what is a love language? Basically, this is understanding the way emotional love is expressed. Different people have different ways they want to be loved, and so do you. So Dr. Gary Chapman came up with 5 different ways to express love. Most people fall into one of the five categories or are a combination of two or more.
The 5 Languages are:
- Words of Affirmation
- Acts of Service
- Receiving Gifts
- Quality Time
- Physical Touch
Ever wondered why your husband gives you a gift, but somehow it doesn’t really impress you? No matter what he gives you you’re not really moved and maybe you’re wondering if there’s something wrong with you? It could be that YOUR love language is Acts of Service and if he decides to do the dishes, it would probably mean more to you than any gift he could buy.
The idea behind the love languages is to know which language speaks to your spouse and use that to communicate meaningfully with him. BUT if you’re not aware of what yours is, it could be a problem spot for you.
SO, do you know what your love language is?
