Guess what? That baby is most likely teething.

When it comes to teething, the process varies for each toddler. While some toddlers don’t develop any teeth even at their first birthday, others begin to show signs of teething as early as from 4 months old. Most babies grow their first teeth between 4 and 7 months of age. If  by the 15th to 18th month no tooth has been formed, you should see your pediatrician.

Stage One

The first set of teeth to appear are the bottom two middle teeth, there after the top middle teeth, followed by the ones along the sides and back. Like started earlier teething varies for each toddler, no two persons are the same, so there shouldn’t be a cause for alarm if your toddler doesn’t follow these stages listed above.  Most times the teeth is not straight, but they usually straighten out over

Stage Two

The last sets of teeth to appear are the second molars, found in the very back of the mouth on the top and bottom. Teething is generally associated with discomfort, this may be in the gum or the jaw and it is due to the tooth preparing to erupt through the gum surface. The gum may appear swollen and reddish in color as the tooth moves beneath the surface of the gum tissue and often times a fluid-filled area similar may be seen over the tooth. The larger molars cause more discomfort than other teeth and this is due to their larger surface area slicing through the gum tissue.

Common Symptoms of Teething

Teething is a very difficult time for most babies, some actually fall sick during this period; they may even develop a fever. Below are symptoms some toddlers experience while teething:

  • Drooling.
  • Facial rash.
  • Gum swelling.
  • Irritability and crankiness.
  • Biting behavior.
  • Sleep problems due to gum discomfort.
  • Constant gnawing: wanting to use everything to rub on the gum.
  • Refusal to eat.

Tip: Gently apply pressure with something cool it will help relieve the pain of teething. Use of teething gels which contains a mild antiseptic and anesthetic is also advised to use for toddlers, it will also help in to ease the pain and prevent infection.

Toddlers are fun to watch grow, as parents watching them grow is a memorable moment.
