Mercy Aigbe Gentry Opens Up About On-Going Domestic Violence in Her Marriage

Popular Yoruba movie actress and business woman, Mercy Aigbe Gentry has spoken publicly for the first time about moving out of her marital home due to domestic violence at the hands of her husband. Last week, the Nollywood actress was hospitalized with multiple injuries, which she claimed were as a result of a beating by her husband, Lanre Gentry.
Mr. Gentry, who denied the allegation in an Instagram post, claimed that he had never beaten his wife because he loved her very much (his Instagram account is no longer public).
Mercy Aigbe, who has since taken out the Gentry on her social media handles, has finally spoken out about the domestic violence she has suffered in her marriage. In an Instagram post where she put up a picture of her battered face, she said she needed to speak out because of the lies her husband had written about her. In that post she said,
“I had sleepless night because I just couldn’t comprehend why someone i loved , someone with whom I have a child will be hell bent on destroying me, I just cannot comprehend it.”
She went on mention the allegations her husband had made against her and called for proof.
Dear Lanre Gentry, It breaks my heart that I have to do this but as it is you have left me with no choice……I had sleepless night because I just couldn’t comprehend why someone i loved , someone with whom I have a child will be hell bent on destroying me, I just cannot comprehend it…….. In another Instagram post published just 3 days ago, she asked, “Why would a man who claims to love you, beat you to the extent of breaking your skull?” With that post, she also included a picture of herself in the hospital bed as well as a photo of the doctor’s report.

In an interview with Broadway TV, Mercy Aigbe revealed that the abuse had been going on for quite some time and that she stayed because loved him. Although she has moved out of her marital home, she says it’s not because she wants her marriage to end, “It’s not like I wanted to walk away but I just feel like we need help. I spoke to my husband’s brother about it. I told him I was going to pack out for some time while my husband seeks therapy. I just wanted to feel safe, that is why I moved my things out. This last beating was brutal. I actually thought I was going to die. I’m still coughing blood.”
The actress has pressed criminal charges against her husband, who has been remanded at the Kirikiri Prisons in Ikoyi. He has been granted bail by an Ikeja magistrate court on a three-count charge of domestic violence, assault and threat to life. The case has been adjourned to July 12.
