SHOWING AFFECTION IN FRONT OF YOUR KIDS

For quite a number of us showing any sort of public affection is an absolute no-no. Even more so in front of our kids. There is no question about it, there are definitely some forms that cannot be shown to our kids, but simple hugs and kisses are to their advantage contrary to our beliefs.

Growing up I had quite a good number of friends that their parents didn’t show a lot of affection, and simple words like “I love you,” were scarce if there at all. My parents, on the other hand, shared signs of affection in front of us, either a peck or a hug. We knew our mom’s pet name and heard them say “I love you” to each other.

Whichever of the above you are comfortable with is what you should do. We are going to look at a few benefits of showing affection in front of your kids. All these are based on research done.

Strengthens family bonds

The children in the family feel more secure when they see their parents love each other. It gives them reassurance of love.

It is a good example for the kids

If it is our desire for our children to have healthy relationships as they get older, then they need to have a picture of what healthy relationships look like. As it is now, they do not have good examples in the media on the subject of healthy relationships.

It helps us sets priorities

My kids understand that my husband, their father is my best friend, and I need to see to his needs. Your husband has fewer needs than they do and they understand that you do not shirk responsibility to them but you give priority to your best friend (especially when they have wants as opposed to needs).

Teaches kids to share their emotions

This helps your children understand that even if you disagree with someone, you can still love them. By this example, they will feel more comfortable in expressing their emotions. Your kids come to understand that even when they are in trouble, their parents still love them, as they have seen examples of their parents’ relationship.

It strengthens your marriage relationship

As couples are affectionate to each other throughout the day, their relationship is strengthened. Your relationship comes first as it is the foundation for the whole family unit to work efficiently. These shows of affection reassure your spouse that he/she is on your mind even when you seem busy.

Either a kiss, a gentle rubbing of your spouse’s back or a hug; as a show of affection can go a long way to do all of the things above.
