Baking soda does not sound like any ingredient you would find in a beauty product, and yet this staple of our mother’s kitchen can be used for so many beauty treatments. What we love about baking soda is that it’s available (you can find it in any supermarket) and it’s affordable. So without further ado, we present you with beauty uses of baking soda.

1. Natural deodorant

Baking soda makes a great natural deodorant if you don’t want to use those filled with chemicals. Just add a little water and mix it into a paste then rub under your armpit with a soft brush or a powder puff. You could also add a few drops of your favourite essential oil to give it a lovely scent. If you think you might need more than one application during the day, fill an empty makeup container with the paste and use your brush or powder puff to apply.

2. Home Manicure and Pedicure

If your cuticles are sore from too many manicures, use baking soda to restore and strengthen them. Baking soda is gentle on the cuticles and it’s also used to exfoliate and make your fingers smooth. You can rub the baking soda around your fingers and then mix some with water and soak your hands in it for a few minutes. Rinse off with warm water.

3. Whitening your teeth

This is one secret of white teeth that has been used for a very long time. To get your teeth white and sparkly, dip the tip of your brush in baking soda and brush with it before using toothpaste. You can also mix baking soda with water for an effective anti-fungal mouthwash.

4. Facial Scrub

To make a quick facial scrub that’s also effective and gentle on your skin, mix baking soda with ground oats (you can blend your oats in a dry blender). This will get rid of the dead skin on your face, leaving it fresh and healthy. To make a gentle face wash, you can mix one teaspoon of baking soda with one tablespoon of honey together and massage it gently on your face before rinsing with warm water.

5. Bath Soak

If you love to soak in the bath, consider adding half a cup of baking soda to your bath water. When you sit in a bath full of water, the baking soda acts as an antioxidant, but it also makes your skin smoother and softer.

6. Acne/Blackhead treatment

This is the best acne and blackhead treatment. For surface acne, add a little baking soda paste to the spot and watch it dry up in almost no time. You can also mix baking soda with honey and apply on your face for about fifteen minutes. As a matter of fact, this is what most beauticians use to get rid of blackheads.

So that’s it people, natural baking soda for a more natural lifestyle! Nigerian women already tend to live natural lifestyles and we’ll do our best to showcase ways you can do this in a cost effective manner. Yesterday we brought you tips from Joyce Daniels, who is a Naturalista – she lives the natural lifestyle. She mentioned using a natural deodorant. We don’t know if she uses baking soda, but this is definitely something to try.
