The Punch newspaper recently carried a news story about three children who had been abandoned by their father in a boarding school for the past eight years. We shared the story here on Naija Housewives and when the father reached out to Punch newspaper with his own story, we shared that with you also.
The story triggered emotional responses from Nigerians across the nation and several stepped up to the plate, asking for an account number where they could send their contributions. Nigerians totally made us proud.
Last week the father went to the school to see his children for the first time in eight years. An angry mob, incensed on behalf of the children met him and it took intervention to keep him from being attacked.
He promised never to leave them again. He said:
“I have offended a lot of people. I have offended my children. I have offended Nigerians. I accept all the blame. And I am really very sorry. I understand that what I have done is very wrong. I was afraid of two things: One was that if I came here, I would be arrested and the second reason was the accumulated debt of the children’s school fees. I reasoned that if I should come to the school, I would be handed over to the police.
“I really miss my children and this time around, I am going to change. I want them to have a good educational background so that they can become important persons in the future. I don’t want them to suffer. I will never leave them again. But all these years, I have been battling with hard times. Things have been very tough for me.“
We are so happy for these children. It’s a beautiful thing when a story ends well. We hope that this family is given all the support necessary to help them stay together.
