Love: Be a Better Parent
This week in continuing our talk about love, we will focus on loving our kids. The first step in loving our kids is being the best parents we can be. Parenting is a rewarding journey but hard work, and when we think of loving these kids we need new ways of becoming better parents for our children. Here are five ideas on how to sharpen your parenting skills.
- Get Advice from Older Hands
No one knows it all; taking advice from those who have been through the challenging job of parenting and have been successful at it is an extremely wise move.
Get advice from all parents of grown children, and ask what they wish they had done differently. If you can learn from the mistakes of others when your children are still young, you are already on the road to success. Many parents of adult children have wonderful insights we can learn from.
- Read up on it
There are quite a few great books available today in regards to parenting, and it is easier now to access books than at any other time in history. Take advantage of this, and go pick a few to begin with. Read reviews and pay attention to what personally resonates in you while reading about them. This will be a good indicator as to whether the book would be a good choice for you. Ask people you know and respect for recommendations.
- Compare Notes
Find a group of friends who have children around the same age as yours. Share stories as you navigate the challenging waters of parenthood. Friends will be a great asset to you for being able to compare notes with and discuss what works and what doesn’t. They are also a great support system.
- Take Care of Yourself
Don’t underestimate the importance of self-care when parenting. This step alone will make you a more capable parent. Taking a break when necessary will allow you to recharge and be more patient and able to handle whatever comes your way.
- Think about what You’re Doing
Take a moment of reflection every now and then. Think about what is working in your family and what isn’t. Parenting is not the kind of job where you can make a plan and stick to it without any change. Parenting involves change, and lots of it.
Decide what you can begin to change and then make a list. Focus on one thing at a time so as not to overwhelm yourself. You don’t need to bring extra stress upon yourself. When change is implemented slowly, it gives everyone time to adjust.
Being a good role model and showing your children that you are willing to change sets a great example for them as they grow into healthy, mature adults.
Parenting is a job that takes every bit of strength, energy and dedication you can give, but it is worth every effort. When you are looking for ways to improve your parenting skills, those ways will come to you. Reach out and take the opportunity today to improve your skills and see how rewarding it can be.
