No Polio Case in Three Months – Nigeria

Nigeria has not recorded any new polio case in the past three months. This information was obtained from a Weekly Polio Update that was published this week by the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI). The report also stated that Nigeria has reduced polio cases by more than 90 percent from 49 cases by this time last year to six cases as at 23rd October, 2014.

As one of the last countries still battling the dreaded childhood disease, this is a significant milestone for Nigeria. There has been a national drive for the complete eradication of polio and the international medical community has given a lot of support toward that end.

The Northern part of Nigeria has been the most affected region mostly because biases and prejudice hinder many parents from getting their children vaccinated. Not too long ago, health workers were attacked in that region. If we are to completely get rid of Polio in Nigeria, we need all hands on board. We need clerics and influential people campaigning for the right of every child to get vaccinated. It’s time to end polio in Nigeria. India has done it, and so we have no excuse.
