[media-credit id=1 align=”aligncenter” width=”410″]courtney-dike-ii[/media-credit]What is this country becoming biko? So we now have people who are turning down cash rewards in US Dollars? Hian. Before long, people will become patriotic and then stop taking bribes and before you know it, public officials will completely shun corruption! That’s how it starts o … a little at a time. Okay, before we go on a long rant, let’s tell you why we’re ranting.

Courtney Dike a 19-year-old, younger sister to Eagles striker Bright Dike, who plays for the Super Falconettes, Nigeria’s Under 20 female football team has rejected the $7,000 (about N1.2million) paid to her by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for participating in the 2014 U-20 Women’s World Cup, where the Falconets came second.

When asked her reason for turning down the bonus she said “she is satisfied with the opportunity given to her to play for Nigeria, which she considers bigger than monetary reward.”

NFF’s Head of Competitions, Dr Sanusi Mohammed, revealed that the federation is shocked at Courtney’s refusal and the position of her family not to collect the money. Courtney played all six matches for the Falconets including the 0-1 loss to Germany’s under-20 women in Montreal in the final of the FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup in August. She scored two goals at the tournament and also holds the record of scoring the fastest goal at FIFA women’s tournaments when she netted in 18 seconds in Nigeria’s 2-1 win over South Korea in the group stage.

We wish her well even though she’s changing the status quo. Forget about sarcasm, if she continues like this and influences other athletes to join the bandwagon, then we will be in for interesting times in Nigeria.
