My husband and I watched ‘Capture the Flag’ with my children (ages 6, 4 and 2) and it was an interesting movie. First of all, it is an animated movie, what we usually term cartoon in this side of the world. The story had us thinking and talking for several days and we watched it three times.
The Story
Mike is a 12 year old boy who dreams of becoming an astronaut. When an evil billionaire devises a plan to go to the moon and steal the flag, a decision is made that a team will be sent to the moon to preserve history. Mike stows away in the rocket with the help of his friends and something goes wrong. In the end, it is up to Mike, Amy and his grandfather, a retired NASA astronaut to save the day, with the help of their friend, Marty.
Why We Liked Capture the Flag
It is inspiring. This children wanted something so much that they decided to do something about it. When they found themselves in a tight situation, they were resourceful and found a way to make things work.
It promotes science. We don’t really have a lot of movies that do that without shoving science down the throats of children. This was subtle and by the time we were done watching the first time, my 4 year old was already talking about going to the moon.
It kept the children glued to the TV. And really, we all know that is priceless. Anything that occupies them is a huge plus. We also liked the fact that it wasn’t all about sorcery and magic and witchcraft like most kid’s animation seems to be lately. Exposing the children continually to that is despairing.
What We Didn’t Really Like
We did not get to bond with the characters. Usually when the children watch a movie, they tend to relate to a character there, but it did not happen this time around. Mike (and Amy and Marty) could have been really lovable characters if a little more character development was done. So that was a problem for us.
Our children enjoyed it – even the 2 year old. All in all, it was a great movie and one that is highly recommended.
