It became quite the debate on Twitter when media personality Gbemi Olateru-Olagbegi called out Sailors Lounge for refusing entry to her and her “Americanah” friend who just wanted to “chop pepper soup”. According to the OAP, the bouncer at the door had told them that the management policy of the lounge was to deny entry to “unescorted ladies”.
As expected, Twitter erupted and started to call the lounge sexist – which lets be honest they actually are. That sort of policy will be based on the premise that a woman is dependent on a man and can therefore not afford to buy a thing for herself.
To defend their image, the lounge replied by saying it only disallows men and women who aren’t dressed properly and that their bouncers can get a little “overzealous”. It’s unlikely that the bouncers will act against management’s directive. Looks like the brand is trying to save face by throwing their workers under the bus.
Other individuals started coming out of the woodworks saying they too (or their friends and family) have been turned back by the lounge’s bouncers for not having strong men by their side.
One way or the other, this is publicity for the lounge as knowing Nigerians, most ladies will want to go unescorted to test the theory.
